BPK – How to Play Famous Tori Amos Riffs Part III (Piano/Keyboard)

Segments from: Leather, Flying Dutchman, Doughnut Song, Cornflake Girl, and Father Lucifer. Happy New Year! The fuzz monster shows up in the audio here and there but not too loudly or frequently, fortunately. He (she?) has a special dislike for my tutorials, and seems to enjoy infesting them more than song performances. I understand it has something to do with radio frequencies near the amp (?) but I am past the age of understanding all of that tech stuff. Maybe in another life. Fortunately, when you play at your piano or keyboard, there will be no fuzz… unless you have an obnoxious friend with a raspy voice wheezing into your ear the whole time. BPK – How to Play Famous Tori Amos Riffs Part II (Piano/Keyboard)

Includes: Spark (extended), Cornflake Girl, Lust, Bliss, Take Me with You, Space Dog. For songwriters: A little tidbit of information about Spark… There is only one minor chord in this song and it’s in the chorus. Everything else is Major. How is that possible? It’s one of the most haunting and dark songs ever written! And yet it is almost entirely weaved together with Major chords. Tori employs a very powerful style here using major chords in a sequence that implies a holistic minor identity. What she does is she plays a major chord, for instance E Major, and then follows it with a chord that prominently pronounces the “third” in that major chord’s parallel minor. The note G# distinguishes E Major from its parallel e minor, which uses G natural in its stead. After playing E Major, Tori moves to a setting that uses G natural in a very strong anchoring position, like C Major (where G natural is the fifth) or, as in the bridge, G Major (where it is the root of the chord). Another good example of this is the part of the bridge preceding the climax and mini-climax. Right at, “say you don’t want it,” she moves from A Major to a booming C in the bass, C natural being the third in A Major’s parallel of a minor. Mastery of these techniques is just one of the reasons why Tori is the best pop/rock songwriter living today, in my opinion. So kudos to her for bringing us Spark. :-) Here are some links to covers of the above that may be helpful in tying everything together. Spark

LEARN TO PLAY BLUES HARMONICA – Lesson# 5 – BAJAN PIEDPIPER

Learn to play harmonica. MUSIC 100 Put the video on pause and read these side-bar notes before you watch. There are two aspects of music that particularly interest us – melody and harmony. In blues, the melody will be played by a lead instrument (for us on a harp) and the harmony (chords) will be played -usually – by a guitar or a keyboard such as a piano or organ. Playing blues has to do with improvising. What you want to avoid when improvising are ’sour notes’ –ie notes that sound discordant! THE FACT IS you can play ANY note ANY TIME! ~ But there is a ‘trick’ to it! There are notes that sound right and some that definitely sound ‘wrong’ ! YOUR EAR TELLS YOU WHICH NOTES ARE HARMONIOUS AND WHICH ARE INHARMONIOUS! HOW TO DEAL WITH SOUR NOTES ~ DAMAGE CONTROL – Trick #1 -ooo- HOW TO PLAY RIFFS THAT ‘FIT’ EACH TIME ~ Trick#2. One of the skills you have to learn ~ is how to cover a mistake. Whenever you play a discordant note, what some call a ‘wrong note’ – you get off it right away! You certainly may use them as stepping stones, meaning when you play it (or them) you just touch them and quickly move to the next note. Another way of saying this is ~ you can use discordant notes as links to bridge one harmonious note to the other. Again, let it be clear: the trick is to not dwell long or linger on the discordant note. In real terms ~ you may use all notes when you play, but discordant notes you use as passing tones. Yes! DO use ‘discordant notes’ – they give your music
